Luxury Holidays

What luxury travel actually means

Luxury travel is not a category of hotel. The word has been used so indiscriminately by the industry that it has almost lost meaning. Five-star ratings describe a set of facilities, not an experience. What our clients mean when they say they want a luxury holiday is something more specific: they want the friction removed. They want someone who knows what they are doing to plan the trip, knows the people at the other end, and can solve problems without a call to a customer service number.

The hotels matter, of course. We work with the finest properties in every destination we sell, and we hold direct relationships rather than booking through intermediaries. But the highest-end accommodation with poor planning around it is still a disappointing holiday. The planning is the luxury. Everything else follows from it.

The destinations where luxury travel works best

The Indian Ocean is the most consistently booked luxury destination in our portfolio. The Maldives, the Seychelles and Mauritius all operate at a level of hospitality that is exceptional by any standard. The private villa model, whether overwater in the Maldives or on a hillside in the Seychelles, suits the way our luxury clients want to travel: space, privacy, unhurried service, and a setting that does not require you to compete with other guests for a sunlounger.

Japan operates on its own definition of luxury. A ryokan in the Japanese Alps, with a private onsen fed by a mountain spring, kaiseki served in the room, and cotton yukata rather than a hotel robe, is a completely different kind of high-end experience from a Caribbean beach resort. Both are exceptional. They suit different clients. We match the experience to the person rather than defaulting to one geography.

East Africa safari at the luxury end of the market means private conservancy access, exclusive-use camps and guides who have spent years in that specific landscape. The difference between a well-run midrange camp and a private concession is not primarily the thread count. It is the number of vehicles in the bush, the depth of guide knowledge, and the flexibility to follow a leopard for an hour because there is no one else competing for the same time.

The Caribbean and Central America round out the luxury geography we cover most frequently: St Barts for the combination of French Caribbean sophistication and outstanding beaches; Turks and Caicos for Grace Bay; Costa Rica at the boutique lodge end of the market, where properties like the ones we use in the Osa Peninsula offer genuine remoteness without compromising on comfort.

The multi-centre luxury itinerary

The most satisfying luxury holidays are rarely single-destination. A week in the Maldives alone is wonderful. A week in the Maldives following three nights in Dubai or Abu Dhabi is a complete trip. The contrast between urban luxury and oceanic seclusion is part of what makes it work. You arrive at the resort with genuinely nothing to do but be there.

Japan combines city luxury in Tokyo with ryokan luxury in Kyoto, the Hakone hills or the Izu Peninsula. The contrast between Aman Tokyo and a traditional inn in the mountains is not a compromise between two different styles of travel. It is the point. Both experiences are elevated. Together they are more than the sum of their parts.

East Africa to Indian Ocean is the combination we build most frequently for luxury safari clients: three or four nights in a private concession in Kenya or Tanzania, then a direct flight to the Seychelles or Zanzibar. The beach landing after the intensity of the bush feels genuinely earned. It is a trip structure that clients repeat, often every two or three years.

How we work with luxury clients

Luxury clients have typically done a significant amount of travel. They have stayed in the obvious properties. They want to know what we would actually recommend, with an honest assessment of what a destination is really like rather than a recitation of hotel brochure copy. We give that assessment.

The planning conversation is as detailed as the client wants. We work from a brief, build an itinerary, revise it until it is right, and then manage the logistics end to end. Property selection, transfer quality, internal flight timing, table reservations, private guides, spa bookings and activity pre-arrangements are all part of what we do. Nothing is left to sort out on arrival.

Our consultants have personal experience of the properties they recommend. If we have not stayed somewhere, we do not recommend it on the strength of a supplier presentation. That is a non-negotiable part of how we work.

Why book your luxury holiday with The Internet Traveller

We hold direct relationships with the hotels, lodges and camps we use. That means genuine preferred allocation, confirmed suite categories, and the ability to resolve problems directly with the property rather than through a tour operator switchboard. For the most sought-after suites in peak season, direct relationships are the difference between booking and not booking.

Every itinerary we build is ATOL protected and ABTA bonded. The brief is yours. The itinerary we produce is built entirely around it, not around margin on specific properties.
