Beach Holidays

What a tailor-made beach holiday actually means

Most beach holidays are sold as a resort and a transfer. You choose the hotel, book the flight, and for seven or fourteen nights the world shrinks to a pool, a beach bar and a menu. That is not what we do. A tailor-made beach holiday is built around where you actually want to go, how you want to spend your time, and what the beach is the backdrop to rather than the only point.

For some clients the beach is genuinely the whole destination. Two weeks in the Maldives on an overwater villa, with nothing scheduled except snorkelling and a dinner reservation. We plan those trips well. For most clients the beach is the final act of something more varied: a week in Japan then five nights in Bali, or three nights in Dubai then ten nights in the Maldives. The combination is usually more satisfying than the beach alone.

Indian Ocean beaches: the most consistently booked in our portfolio

The Maldives is the single most popular beach destination we sell. The atolls are spread across 900 kilometres of the Indian Ocean, which means the right island matters as much as the right hotel. Transfer times from Male airport range from twenty minutes by speedboat to forty-five minutes by seaplane. We know which resorts justify the seaplane transfer, which have the best house reef for snorkelling without getting on a boat, and which are genuinely family-friendly rather than just child-tolerant.

Mauritius suits a different kind of traveller. The island has a working culture, real towns, and a hybrid French and Creole identity. The beaches vary significantly around the coast. The west, around Flic en Flac and Le Morne, has the calmest water and the most reliable sunsets. We match clients to the right part of the island rather than defaulting to the first hotel a search returns.

Zanzibar combines East African character with Indian Ocean beaches, making it the natural finale to a Kenya or Tanzania safari. Stone Town is a UNESCO-listed old town worth more than a half-day visit. The north and northeast coasts have the clearest water.

The Seychelles, particularly the inner islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, offers the most dramatic granite boulder scenery in the Indian Ocean. We plan Seychelles trips around the quieter shoulder months and the lesser-visited outer atolls for clients who want the scenery without peak-season crowds.

Why the best beach trips combine more than one destination

The most common conversation we have with beach holiday clients goes like this: they want the Maldives, they are flying through Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and they wonder whether they should stop. The answer is almost always yes. Three nights in Dubai before ten nights in the Maldives transforms a beach trip into a full experience. The cultural contrast makes the beach feel more earned.

The same logic applies across most long-haul beach itineraries. Singapore and Bali. Bangkok and Koh Samui. Nairobi and Zanzibar. Cape Town and Mauritius. New York and Barbados. Combining two stops adds modest cost to a long-haul trip but significant depth to the experience. We recommend the combination almost every time.

Caribbean and Central America

Barbados is the Caribbean island we sell most consistently to British travellers, partly because of direct flights from Gatwick and Heathrow and partly because the west coast has the calmest, clearest water in the Caribbean. We are specific about which part of the island suits which client.

St Lucia is the most visually dramatic island in the eastern Caribbean: the Pitons rise directly from the sea, the rainforest covers the interior, and the beaches on the west coast are sheltered and warm. Antigua, with 365 beaches and the historic English Harbour, suits clients who want history alongside the beach.

For clients who want to combine Caribbean beaches with Central America, Costa Rica on the Pacific side combined with Nicoya Peninsula beaches gives you wildlife and beach in a single country. Belize combines Mayan ruins with the second-largest barrier reef in the world.

Southeast Asian beaches

Thailand works as a multi-centre beach destination because the two coasts have opposite seasons: the Andaman side, including Phuket and Krabi, peaks from November to April; the Gulf side, including Koh Samui, peaks from January to August. There is almost always a good beach window somewhere in Thailand. We route clients to the right coast for their travel dates rather than defaulting to Phuket.

Bali combines beach and culture within a single island. Seminyak and Canggu for beaches and restaurants; Ubud for rice terraces, temples and spa culture. Bali works as a standalone destination as well as a leg in a longer Southeast Asia circuit.

When to go: matching season to destination

Long-haul beach holidays require more planning than European sun breaks because the seasons vary significantly by destination and within destinations. The Indian Ocean is affected by the southwest monsoon from May to October. The Caribbean hurricane season runs June to November, with August and September the peak risk months.

We plan beach holidays around your travel dates rather than a default recommendation. If you want to travel in September, we will tell you honestly which beach destinations are at their best, which are manageable, and which to avoid.
