Picton is a fantastic stop off on a New Zealand multi-centre holiday. It is a town located in the Marlborough Region of New Zealand's South Island. This quaint and beautiful town is situated near the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound, which is 40 miles east of Wellington and 16 miles north of Blenheim. Waikawa lies just north-east of Picton and is well worth a visit. It is frequently considered to be a contiguous part of Picton.

Picton is a major transport hub in New Zealand's  travel network, connecting the South Island road and rail lines with the ferries across the Cook Strait to the North Island and Wellington. The town has a population of just over 4,000 people, which makes it the second-largest town in the Marlborough Region behind Blenheim.

The town is also the usual starting point for holiday makers travelling to the Marlborough Sounds. Highlights include walking, fishing, the Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand Track, and Diving. A popular diving trip can be taken here to the 177metre long wreck of the former cruise liner MS Mikhail Lermontov, which now lies at the base of Port Gore, just over 35 metres under the water. Dive charter boats regularly leave from Picton for the final resting place of the Mikhail Lermontov, one of the world’s largest and most publicly accessible and most recent shipwrecks. Guiding is a prerequisite as the 1986 wreck is in 30m of water and divers can become disoriented inside the hull, which lies on its starboard side, so a professional must be present and this can be booked in advance.
