Hanmer Springs is a small quaint little town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. The town is named after an owner of Hawkeswood Station - Thomas Hanmer. Hawkeswood Station is near the Conway river, built during the 1850s. It is located 40 miles southwest of Kaikoura in the Hurunui District and 80 miles northwest of Christchurch. The town lies on a minor road 5 miles north of State Highway 7, the northern route between Christchurch and the West Coast via Lewis Pass. The township resides at the base of Conical Hill.
