Lake Taupo is a lake located in the North Island of New Zealand. It sits in the caldera of the huge Taupo Volcano. With a surface area of 238 square miles, it is by far the largest lake by surface area in New Zealand. Lake Taupo has a perimeter of approximately 120 miles and a deepest point of nearly 200 metres. It is drained by New Zealand's longest river - the Waikato River, while its main tributaries are the Tongariro River, the Waitahanui River, and the Tauranga Taupo River. It is a designated trout fishery with large stocks of introduced rainbow trout and brown trout, so it's a fantastic picturesque fishing spot.
Tourism is a major component of Taupo's commercial sector, and testament to how friendly the locals are and how popular this location is with tourists. The city attracts over 2 million visitors per year. The busiest time for the industry is high summer, which falls around Christmas and New Year, making this a great winter holiday location. Daily maximum temperatures recorded for Taupo can range from an average of 23 °C in January and February to 11.2 °C in July.
