The North Island is one of the two primary islands of New Zealand, alongside the slightly bigger but much less populated South Island. The island is almost 44,000 square miles in area, making it the world's 14th largest island. It has a population of just under 3.5 million. There are twelve primary urban areas in the North Island. Listing from north to south there are some very interesting places to visit such as Auckland, Hamilton, Whangarei, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Tauranga, Gisborne, Napier, Hastings, Whanganui, Palmerston North, and Wellington.
Lake Taupo is siuated in the North island and certainly a popular attraction. It lies in the caldera of the incredible Taupo Volcano. With a surface area of almost 240 square miles, it is by far the largest lake by surface area in the whole of New Zealand, and it is also the second largest freshwater lake by surface area in Oceania after Lake Murray in Papua New Guinea.
Ninety Mile Beach is on the west coast of the of the North Island. It stretches from just west of Kaitaia towards Cape Reinga along the Aupouri Peninsula.
