Though times have changed and the winds have shifted, the Palace On Wheels cruises along in royal style, the kind only the Maharajas of yesteryear could have perpetuated and enjoyed.

The exquisite and exclusive Palace On Wheels has luxurious cabins, wall to wall carpeting, a well stocked bar, two dining cars and a very personalized service... in fact, almost everything that could comprise of heaven on earth for seven days!

Itinerary

Day 1: Depart the UK

Depart London Heathrow on your overnight flight to Delhi

Day 2: Arrive into Delhi

India’s capital and a major gateway to the country, contemporary Delhi is a bustling metropolis which successfully combines in its fold the ancient and the modern. One of the most historic capitals in the world, Delhi is made up of seven ancient cities, spanning the period from the 11th to 20th centuries. It has seen the rise and fall of many emperors, which have left behind a plethora of monuments that commemorate the grandeur and glory of bygone days.

Your tour begins with a half days sightseeing of New Delhi. Drive past the imposing India Gate - a War Memorial Arch, the residence of the President - the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Parliament House and other government buildings. Visit Humayun’s Tomb the first great example of a new and distinctive style, which developed to become the hallmark of the Mughal Dynasty. Also visit the Qutab Minar (Tower of Victory) a masterpiece built to establish the might of Islam and the onset of the Muslim rule in India. (This tour is arranged by Cox and Kings)

You will then go on to have lunch at a local restaurant (arranged by Cox and Kings)

After lunch, you will be transferred to the Safdarjung railway station (reporting time 16:00 hrs) where you will be given a warm traditional welcome and introduced to your fellow travellers before the Palace on Wheels pulls out into the night for a week long luxury cruise through fascinating Rajasthan.

You will overnight onboard the Train.

Day 3: Jaipur

You will have breakfast on board the Train. The first stop of the Palace on Wheels is Jaipur, one of the best planned cities of the world, in its time. This, the capital city of Rajasthan, popularly known as the Pink City, was founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1727 AD. Camel drawn carts are characteristic of Jaipur’s passing street scene, making the city a tourists delight.

MORNING: At 08:00am, you will proceed for a city tour of Jaipur. The tour includes the spectacular City Palace a synthesis of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles consisiting of an overwhelming complex of exquisite palaces, the intriguing red sandstone Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) - a five-storied wonder with an incredible pyramidal facade and overhanging windows with latticed screens, the Jantar Mantar Observatory, a stone astrological and astronomical wonder built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the 18th century and the Albert Hall - one of the oldest museums of Rajasthan.

You will then have lunch at the famous Amber Fort attraction.

After lunch, visit the Amber Fort. Experience an elephant ride / jeep ride along the ramparts of the Fort. Crowning the crest of a hill, Amber Fort offers a view of Maota Lake and the historic old town located at the base of the hill, which formed the early seat of the Amber kings before the fort was made their capital. Shop for Jaipur’s famous jewellery, handicrafts, carpets blue pottery and textiles. Near the Ajmeri Gate is located Rajasthali the only Rajasthan Govt. Emporium that sells genuine handicrafts at fixed rates.

On completion of the tour, return back to the Palace on Wheels to freshen up before you proceed for dinner.

After dinner, you return to the train and depart for Sawai Madhopur at 11:30 PM.

You will overnight onboard the Train.

Day 4: Sawai Madhopur / Chittaurgarh

EARLY MORNING: One can almost sense the life of the wilderness, as the Palace on Wheels arrives in Sawai Madhopur, a city named after its founder Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I. At 06:30am, you depart for a game drive at the Ranthambhore National Park. This wildlife sanctuary, a unique juxtaposition of natural and historical richness, is considered to be the countrys best for observing and photographing the activities of the tiger. You may get the opportunity to see some of the 24 different species of mammals in the park, including the spotted deer, sambhar, Jungle cat, Panthers and Hyenas. The park is also home to almost 300 different kinds of birds.

You will have both breakfast & Lunch on board the Train included.

EVENING: Arrive in Chittaurgarh Home of the Brave. This hilltop fortress is considered to be the largest fort in India, built by various Mauryan rulers during 5th to 8th century. The fort is accessible through seven ceremonial gates. While most of its once stunning structures now lie in ruins, the Rana Kumbha palace and the Padmini Palace are considered master pieces of Rajput architecture.

Depart for a sightseeing tour of the Fort, followed by a Sound and Light show
Dinner at the Panna Hotel with cultural programs, music and barbeques (Venue subject to change).

Thereafter, return to the Train and depart for Udaipur at 02:00 AM.

You will overnight onboard the Train.

Day 5: Udaipur

You will begin your day with breakfast on board the Train.

Arrive in Udaipur at 08:00am. Udaipur is known as the City of Lakes. It is the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar, one of the oldest surviving dynasties in the world and was established around 1567 A.D. The chequered history of Mewar is showcased in the city of Udaipur, which is akin to an oasis in the desert state of Rajasthan. It is a rich and beguiling tapestry of lakeside palaces, forts, temples, havelis and gardens, reflecting the varied influences of the centuries.

MORNING: proceed for a sightseeing tour of Udaipur, visiting the City Palace, Saheliyon-ki-Badi, Crystal Palace and the Jagdish Temple.

City Palace is composed of 4 major and several minor palaces that form a single façade. Its main entrance is through a triple arched gate, the Tripolia, built in 1725. The gate leads to a series of courtyards, corridors and gardens. The Rai Angan (Royal Courtyard) has a shrine, which is the oldest part of Udaipur. It is here that Udai Singh met an ascetic who suggested this site for Udaipur. The centrally located 17th century Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) gets its name from inlaid glass mosaics of peacocks on its walls. To the west of the main gate lies Khush Mahal (Palace of Happiness) and to its south lies Shambhu Niwas, built in the 19th century. This was followed by Fateh Prakash, now a hotel, and known for its Durbar Hall and Crystal Gallery a balcony of the Fateh Prakash Banquet Hall, notable for its museum of crystal glass furniture, crockery and chandeliers.

Next, visit Saheliyon ki Badi, Garden of the Maids of Honour, which comprises of ornamental fountains, a lotus pool and rose garden. It was built specially for one of the queens of Udaipur, whose dowry included 48 maids.

You will also have lunch included at a Palace hotel.

AFTERNOON: Enjoy a boat ride on Lake Pichola (subject to sufficient water levels) with the City Palace extending along its eastern bank and the Jag Niwas island and the Jag Mandir enclosed in its vast expanse. The lake is surrounded by hills and its panoramic beauty is best viewed against a backdrop of the setting sun. Return to the Train and depart for Jaisalmer.

Your dinner will be included, and you will overnight onboard the Train.

Day 6: Jaisalmer

You will start your day with breakfast on board the Train.

Rising out of the heart of the Thar Desert is the city of Jaisalmer. Founded by Prince Jaisal in 1156, the city grew to be a major staging post on the trade route, across the forbidding desert, from India to the West. The entire living area of Jaisalmer lies within the gigantic citadel walls.

MORNING: Arrive in Jaisalmer at 09:15am and proceed for a sightseeing tour of the Jaisalmer Fort - the yellow sandstone fort is an imposing sight, towering magnificently over the city. Discover the painstakingly latticed havelis and mansions with their grand facades. The Nathmalji-ki-haveli, Patwon-ki-haveli and Salim Singh-ki-haveli are fine examples of the stone carvers skill.

You will have lunch at hotel Moomal (Venue subject to change)

AFTERNOON: Later, experience an exciting Camel ride across the sand dunes, to enjoy an evening tea against a backdrop of the setting sun.

Enjoy Rajasthani food and Traditional music (Venue yet to be decided)

Dinner at a Palace hotel Thereafter, return to the Train to depart for Jodhpur.

You will overnight onboard the Train.

Day 7: Jodhpur

Your breakfast is included on board the Train.

Jodhpur is also called the Blue city located on the edge of the Thar desert was once the capital of former princely state of Marwar founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha and is now the second largest city of Rajasthan. While the graceful palaces, forts and temples bring alive the historic grandeur, exquisite handicrafts, folk dances, music and the brightly attired people lend a romantic aura to the city. Countless festivities celebrate the rich past and culture of the princely state.

MORNING: Arrive in Jodhpur at 07:00am and depart sightseeing. Visit the magnificent Meherangarh fort, one of Rajasthan's finest forts, which looks down protectively over the city from the hilltop. Still run by the Maharaja of Jodhpur, this 5 km long majestic fort on a 125 metre high hill is one of the most impressive and formidable structures. You will also visit the Umaid Bhavan Palace one of the finest and largest palaces in the World.

You will then go onto have lunch at a Five Star Hotel.

AFTERNOON: After lunch, return to the Palace on Wheels. You depart for Bharatpur at 03:30pm.

Your dinner will be included, and you will overnight onboard the Train.

Day 8: Bharatpur / Agra

MORNING: You will have breakfast on board the train. You arrive in Bharatpur at 05:00 AM and depart for the Keoladeo National Park. Over three hundred species of birds can be seen at the park, many of them migrant species that come from parts as distant as Siberia and China.

Return to the train and depart at 08:45am for Agra.

The city of Agra, the quintessence of the grand Mughal era, reigns to this day in the public mind as the embodiment of royal grace, imposing architecture and power. No tour to India can be complete without paying a visit to this erstwhile capital of the Mughals and the city of the Taj Mahal, the world's most beloved monument.

Arrive in Agra at 10:30am and proceed for a visit to the world renowned Taj Mahal (closed on Friday). Referred to as one of the Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal is the epitome of love, built in white marble by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

You will have lunch included at the Palace Hotel, as well as dinner. You will have the afternoon at leisure.

Return to the Train and depart at 11:00pm for Delhi.

You will overnight onboard the Train.

Day 9: Depart Delhi

Breakfast on board the train

A send off ceremony marks the end of your adventure onboard the Palace on Wheels. You disembark at the Safdarjung railway station at 08:00am and will be met by our Cox and Kings representative. Thereafter, transfer to the Delhi International Airport for your onward flight.
