Sightseeing
If you like trails, A holiday to Boston is perfect. The easy to follow historical routes take in the American Revolution (Freedom Trail), the civil rights movement (Black Heritage Trail) and great writers (Literary Trail of New England).
Museums are well represented in Boston; the Museum of Fine Arts offers as comprehensive a selection as you'll find anywhere, as does the waterfront Institute of Contemporary Arts.
You're never far from greenery when taking a short trip to Boston, even outside of St Patrick's Day. The open spaces at Emerald Necklace are popular retreats, and you should pay homage to sporting legend at the local shrine, Fenway Park baseball stadium. For a quirky diversion, try the hilarious Museum of Bad Art in Dedham.
Shopping
Almost the full retail spectrum is available when you visit Boston, from high street chains to one-off boutiques and even cheap tourist tat.
There's the usual American selection of malls across the city, but for more up market selections, try the Arlington Street end of Newbury Street, near the Ritz-Carlton hotel. Art and literature are well represented shop wise at Charles Street and Massachusetts Avenue respectively.
Food
Certain dishes have become synonymous with Boston and the New England area, and you'll immediately think clam chowder and fish dishes such as cod. Lobster makes its way here from Maine, and Boston baked beans are also famed.
The Irish heritage is reflected in the 'New England boiled dinner' of corned beef and cabbage, and Italian cooking is also a strong presence. Beacon Hill is the place to head for upscale dining, whilst Chinatown offers cheap oriental staples.
After dark
Even Harvard students like a drink, and the large number of scholars keep the bars and pubs well-peopled most of the time. If you are looking for sophistication, you should probably avoid the legendary Cheers bar and head for Newbury Street, though it's a better idea to have a Guinness in a local.
Thanks to the large immigrant community, Boston's Irish bars are more than tacky theme pubs, and 'the craic' is, for once, authentic. Boston is a big town for good ale; Sam Adams is the most illustrious local beer. For more cultural evenings, come during the music season of the Boston Pops, usually starting in March.
Day trips
New England is on your doorstep; a colorful slice of American countryside. Boston is well placed for excursions, whether it's the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire or the coastline along Cape Cod. The area's colonial past is on display, too, and jaunts to Plymouth Rock and the historic town of Salem are popular.
