This Definite symbol of New York art deco and briefly the world’s tallest building, the 1045 foot high Chrysler building was completed in 1930 and remains one of the most distinctive features on the Manhattan skyline. Architect William Van Alen made the first large scale use of stainless steel on a building exterior, employed hub caps as decoration on each setback and made the attention grabbing spire resemble a car’s radiator grille, complete with outward-leaping gargoyles.
