The Museo del Prado is ranked as one of Europe's top art museums and features the work of many of Spain's and Europe's top Renaissance artists. The museum owns 9,000 works but even with its vast gallery space it is only able to display barely one third of that at any one time. The Prado has a breathtaking number of masterpieces. The paintings were collected by the Habsburg and Bourbon monarchs between the 16th and 19th centuries and they spared no expense.
