Robben Island

Robben Island is located 12 kilometres from Cape Town and for almost 400 years it was a place of exile and imprisonment where rulers sent those they regarded as political troublemakers and social outcasts. Since the release of its most famous inmate, Nelson Mandela, in 1990 it has attracted a huge amount of interest. Official tours are booked through the Robben Island Museum. The 7 mile boat trip from V & A Waterfront takes half an hour each way and the tour lasts about three hours. The tour includes a comprehensive look at the political prison and a bus tour across the island.
