Just outside the main port of the island, Sami, lie the caves of Mellisani. Discovered 300 years ago, due to part of them being destroyed by a large earthquake, which created the now public entrance. The caves are 60 metres deep from ground level and can reach 18°c with 90% humidity. There are striking long passages and breath-taking stalactites. In the summer concerts are held in one of the cavern.
