Five kilometres out of Argostoli on the road to Skala is the Venetian fort of St George. This was the capital of the island until 1757 and it acted as the strong hold from invaders and was the place where the ruling families were invited to live. Guarded by its walls, it finally outgrew itself and was deserted. Hidden in the thickets, the massive Cyclopean walls of Krani are evidence of Kefalonia’s ancient inhabitation. The walls stretch for over two kilometres and can be found just outside Argostoli on the hillside behing the lagoon. Mycenean tombs have also been found in the area.
