More about St. Lucia
This spectacular natural paradise with beautiful underwater reefs, rainbow-hued tropical fish, huge barrel sponges, soft corals and sunken ships can quite easily be described as a Shangri-La. Within the rainforests, which are found centrally within St. Lucia, you can hear the calls of the colourful tropical birds including the very rare St. Lucian parrot, the Jacquot. With so much natural and unspoilt landscape it is no surprise that a lot of St. Lucia is intensely protected with access to the rainforest and the offshore reefs rigorously controlled by permit.
Most of the hotels in St. Lucia are found on the north western tip of the island spread amongst small bays and coves which open out in to large expanses of amazing soft white sand. Due to the geography of St. Lucia there are black volcanic sandy beaches as well as mile-long white sandy stretches and by law every beach in St. Lucia has to have public access. The sands of Reduit beach are bordered with tropical greenery and stretch from Gros Islet to Pigeon Island National Park. Areas such as Labrelotte Bay and Choc bay are other white sand beaches found on the western side of the island whereas Anse Chastenet, found further south, is one of the best black volcanic sand beaches and also well renowned for its snorkelling and diving experiences.
There are many things to do and see in St. Lucia other than lay on the beach. With Lovely little towns, mineral baths, tropical rainforests, and an abundance of water-sport facilities there is plenty to keep you occupied. Why not spend a little time in the capital, Castries, with its lively market that is a mix of delicious fruits, exotic vegetables, strong spices, colourful crafts and hand made goods. One of the islands most charming spots, Marigot Bay, is well worth a visit. This yacht haven is surrounded by lively bars and restaurants and is ideal for those who want to either chill out or have those looking to have some fun...or even both!
The pretty area of Rodney Bay is one of St. Lucia’s most fashionable nightlife spots with plenty of good international restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The islands cuisine is a delightful mix of French Creole, colonial English, Carib Indian and African influence, with mouth-watering roti curries, pepperpot stews and fresh catch-of-the-day fish and shellfish. The hotels also offer a great variety of night-time entertainment with beachside barbecues, calypso, steel bands, limbo dancing and fire eating cabarets. For something a little more colourful and traditional you should sample the delights of the Friday Night Street Party at Gros Islet, which is a fun-packed carnival of energetic music, dancing, street vendors selling mouth-watering barbecued chicken and of course the local rum punch.
