Holidays to Bulgaria are becoming increasingly popular as a winter sports destination with its good weather conditions throughout the winter. The three main winter resorts of Pamporovo, Borovets and Bansko attract hordes of skiers and snowboarders, especially in January and February, when the snow is at its heaviest.
Set amid pine woods on the northern slopes of Mount Rila, Borovets is the largest and longest established of the three and hence has marginally better facilities and a greater choice of slopes. It is also the best known abroad and tends to get busy with foreign package tours. The number of hotels, bars and clubs attests to this and you won't be stuck for entertainment come sundown. Pamporovo is similarly well established internationally and has the added appeal of being further south, and very sunny.
A Holiday to Bansko is a newcomer to the scene and is less developed than its better-known counterparts. Its attractions are more traditionally Bulgarian and après-ski is more likely to involve downing a beer with a few locals in a cosy bar than dancing the night away with a bunch of Brits and Germans - although this probably won't be long to come.
