What is the baggage allowance for my flight?

Baggage allowance is set by the airlines and will be detailed on your paperwork.

You will also find what your baggage allowance is on your paperwork, these are all set by the airlines.

How much baggage allowance am I allowed?

It is important to be aware of your baggage allowances when flying.

Each fare-paying passenger is allowed to carry a certain amount of baggage. However, how much baggage you are allowed and how much you have to pay for extra items and additional weight, differs depending on your destination.

Below is a rough guide, provided by the world's airlines so that you can assess how much luggage you'll be able to take for free. Additional charges vary depending on the airline you are using. If in doubt you should contact the airline you are flying with before you travel

There are two systems that airlines use to assess the amount of luggage you can take, the 'Piece' system and the 'Weight' system.

The 'Piece' system allows you to take a certain amount of luggage items on the plane, whilst the more common 'Weight' system uses the combined weight of all your luggage.

The rules below apply to Scheduled airlines governed by IATA. If you are travelling on a holiday Charter flight from the UK the normal baggage allowance is 20kg per person plus one piece of hand luggage. However, some tour operators have a reduced luggage allowance on late bookings of only 15kg per person plus hand luggage. Your tickets will show what your luggage allowance is. If you exceed your luggage allowance you may be charged an excess baggage charge by the airline at check-in. You should also be aware that all sharp objects should be stored in checked in luggage and not be taken into the aircraft cabin as part of your hand luggage. All hand luggage should be of a size that will fit into the aircraft's overhead lockers.

PIECE SYSTEM - The piece system applies on all flights where journeys are:
  • To/from USA and US Territories (including Puerto Rico)
  • To/from Bermuda
  • To/from Canada
  • To Venezuela (not from Venezuela to UK)
  • Between UK and Colombia
  • Between UK and Mexico
  • Between UK and Nigeria
  • Bermuda to/from Bahamas/Jamaica
  • Between points in the Caribbean (ie BGI, ANU, POS)
The free allowances are as follows:
  • 2 pieces, each up to 62 inches (158cm) in total dimensions (length + height + width) and maximum weight 23kg (70lbs) each.
  • Children and infants paying 50% or more of the applicable fare will receive the adult baggage allowance.
  • Infants paying 10% of the applicable adult fare will be permitted a free allowance of one checked bag not exceeding 45ins or 32kg plus one checked fully collapsible child's pushchair / stroller.
  • Infants travelling free of charge are permitted one checked fully collapsible pushchair.

UK DOMESTIC PIECE SYSTEM - Applies only to UK domestic travel.

When domestic travel forms part of a through international journey and the baggage is through checked, the appropriate international system will apply. When the baggage is not through checked, but for example only checked as far as London, the UK domestic portion can take either the international system or the UK domestic system, whichever is more favourable - but any excess is charged at UK domestic system levels. The free allowances are as follows:
  • Either one checked piece with total sum of dimensions not exceeding 62ins
  • Or two checked pieces with total sum of the dimensions not exceeding 62ins when placed side by side.
  • Maximum weight for each piece is 32kgs

WEIGHT SYSTEM - For all other journeys the weight system applies
On all flights from the UK (including through checked baggage) EXCEPT ON USA, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Caribbean, Colombia, Nigeria, journeys from UK to Venezuela and UK domestic flights.
The free baggage allowances are as follows:
  • First Class - 40kg
  • Club Class - 30kg
  • Economy Class - 20kg (BA 23kg)
